Zimbabwe — City authorities in Zimbabwe’s second largest city said Saturday they were appealing to home owners to flush their toilets at a specified time as a way to unblock sewers after days of severe water rationing.

Bulawayo City Council has asked its more than 1 million residents to flush their toilets simultaneously at 7:30 p.m. when water supplies are restored. City officials say “synchronized flushing” is needed to clear waste that would have accumulated in sanitary facilities which will have been affected by days of water outages.

Not to be left behind, Indian Minister of drinking water and sanitation Jairam Ramesh has made an appeal to citizens of Delhi to follow the example set by Zimbabwe. “The government of India is issuing and ordinance to all local governments, municipal corporations, and civic bodies to ensure water supply for 2 hours on the last day of each month”, the Indian minister announced in a press conference held at the swimming pool on the Delhi golf course.

City residents were excited to hear that the government will actually provide water across the entire city on one day. Vimal Ghosh from the Firojpur suburb was ecstatic, “I spent Rs 3000 to install a new western style toilet but have only managed to use it once. I had to walk 3 blocks and carry a bucketful of water to test the flush. I have never used my Toilet since then”.

Yogen Mishra from Junagadh was equally happy “For the past 2 years I’ve been using the toilet as a make shift chair for my computer desk. I have to admit”, he added “it’s quite comfortable he added.”

Lack of water supply has plagued Indian cities for decades prompting citizens to make creative use of their unused toilet spaces. Uses have ranged from makeshift office and study rooms to pantries, aquariums and kitchen herb gardens.
